Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin willing to listen to offers for draft pick
Team holds the No. 3 overall pick in first round at Friday night's NHL Draft in Dallas.
Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin says he's willing to listen to offers for the team's No. 3 overall pick at Friday night's NHL Draft in Dallas.
The Canadiens won the No. 3 pick at the NHL Draft Lottery after finishing 28th out of 31 teams in the NHL standings this season with a 29-40-13 record.
"I'll listen, I'm open," Bergevin said about possibly trading the No. 3 pick when he met with the media Saturday morning at the Bell Centre to discuss Friday night's deal that sent Alex Galchenyuk to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Max Domi. "I've told teams if they want to make me an offer, I'll look at it. But again, sometimes teams don't want to move up. As much as a team wants to move back or move up, if there's no takers or buyers then you just sit where you're at."
Bergevin added that things are "quiet" now.
"There's still ongoing discussions," Bergevin said about who the Canadiens might select if they keep the No. 3 pick. "But there's a few guys we have targeted, yes."
When asked if there are any contracts for players on the current Canadiens roster he might buy out, Bergevin said:"As we speak now, no."
Galchenyuk was the Canadiens' No. 3 overall pick at the 2012 NHL Draft in Bergevin's first year on the job as GM and he was asked if six years later he has any regret about the pick or how the team tried to develop Galchenyuk.
"I believe we did everything to help Alex," Bergevin said. "I think he has produced. His career's not a failure. Players do move, change address. He's not the first one. He's not going to be the first guy that does that. Saying that, if you look at that draft … always to look five years after, well maybe this guy should have been first, of course. But overall, I thought it was a pretty good pick by our staff that year."
Now that first-round draft pick will be playing for the Coyotes.
